This is by far my favorite atmosphere album. Its a nice balance between the lyricism of the earlier songs of the sad clown albums and the quality beats of the later songs on "paint that shit gold" and other albums. In my opinion, this album is full of some of the best lyrics ever to be scribbled down on paper. Its one of those where you can feel the emotions the artist went through went writing each song, a range from depressed, bored, bouts of fleeting happiness, and anger. They say misery loves company, so this album is my fucking favorite when i get bummed out or anything.
Some of the best songs include: the haunting "Nothing but Sunshine", a song disguised as happy, but really involves a discussion of the ups and downs of Slug's childhood, and how he had to just keep telling himself he's happy by saying "its all sunshine, nothing but sunshine."
"They're All Gonna Laugh At You", a powerful song about sellout artists and their fans, and slugs struggle to keep his head up and keep doing what hes doing.
"Guns and Cigarettes", a song about becoming bigger than all the popular things people love today.
"Like Today"- A song about waking up in the morning and doing nothing. Its about a man walking around town, sitting in the park, walking in the music and book stores, and other normal things. As odd as it sounds its my favorite song on the album. It has a bluesy feel to it, and the metaphors he uses are fantastic. Its a perfect description of what i do when i get depressed: just walking around thinking about different things, and being polite to people in acceptance of how shitty i feel.
"Don't Ever Fucking Question That"- This song is about slugs conception and the way his parents met. It describes sex without ever saying the word in the craziest and most beautiful way, and then talks about his relationship with his mom. "I love you, dont ever fucking question that, thats why well probably never get along, if i was better at finding the right words to say it, i wouldnt need to write these motherfucking songs". This is one of the most powerful songs on the album.
Theres several other great sons on the album, but these are my favorites.
this is a great album to kick back on the porch and smoke cigarettes and listen by yourself. It sounds corny as hell, but this album has truely affected the way i look life and the way i feel.
