Dela-Atmosphere Airlines

This album is fucking fantastic. Its the perfect music to play while studying or something because literally every song is good, and as one song ends, the other begins to pick up out of the beat. the album is basically just one really long song. Its hard to explain but when you listen you'll know what i mean. Just download it. Posting one song doesnt even barely give it justice. Download

Immortal Technique is releasing a new project called The Martyr. The first track to drop from the project is called Toast to the Dead and features a previously unreleased track by J. Dilla. Substantive lyrics + a vintage Dilla beat = nuff said. Check it out.

Bobby Exodus

Making some of the best hip hop this side of New York is Bobby Exodus, a local Nashville artist who has been killing it recently. Definitely cop his album on his bandcamp. Really good stuff. Amazing lyrics on top of dope beats. If you're feeling lazy, check out the songs "My Magic Hoody" and "It's Always Nice to Meet Anybody". I would still suggest listening to the album as a whole though.

O.C.-Time's Up

i now understand the line from Blu and Exile: "Same feelin' when you first heard times up".

I just found this song yesterday because apparently ive been living under a rock, but its already at 20+ plays on my iTunes. it has line after line of the most insightful shit that just gives me chills. If you want to know what the fuck core hip hop is about, listen to this song.
its a boring beat at first, but after you listen through once and turn it up super fucking loud youll understand. trust me. its literally just three and a half minutes of straight fire with only a short hook with a slick rick sample. how bad can it be?
its almost impossible to pick out just one dope verse of this song to quote on this post, but here's my favorite.

"Guys be lackin in this thing called rappin just for dough
Of course we gotta pay rent, so money connects, but uhh,
I'd rather be broke and have a whole lot of respect
It's the principal of it, I get a rush when I bust
some dope lines oral, that maybe somebody'll quote
That's what I consider real, in this field of music
Instead of puttin brain cells to work they abuse it
Non-conceptual, non-exceptional
Everybody's either crime-related or sexual
I'm here to make a difference, besides all the riffin
The traps are not stickin, rappers stop flippin
For those who pose lyrical but really ain't true I feel their time's limited, hard rocks too."

SO FUCKING SICK.
im gonna grab some OC albums and post up some more of his shit when i get a chance. heres an mp3 download of the song.

WUGAZI

"With their Wugazi mash-up project, Midwestern producers Cecil Otter and Swiss Andy pay sharp tribute to two iconic acts, punk titans Fugazi and hip-hop superheroes the Wu-Tang Clan. While Fugazi's staunch separation from the traditional music machine discourages use of their music as mash-up fodder, these 13 songs were created with striking precision."-Rolling Stone Magazine

Download this mashup album if you haven't yet. I'm late to post it because I suck, but its really fucking good.
Between this and Legendary Weapons there's been a helluva lot of Wu-Tang coming out of my speakers recently. And that's never a bad thing.

Lucy Ford- The Atmosphere EPs Analysis

This is by far my favorite atmosphere album. Its a nice balance between the lyricism of the earlier songs of the sad clown albums and the quality beats of the later songs on "paint that shit gold" and other albums. In my opinion, this album is full of some of the best lyrics ever to be scribbled down on paper. Its one of those where you can feel the emotions the artist went through went writing each song, a range from depressed, bored, bouts of fleeting happiness, and anger. They say misery loves company, so this album is my fucking favorite when i get bummed out or anything.
Some of the best songs include: the haunting "Nothing but Sunshine", a song disguised as happy, but really involves a discussion of the ups and downs of Slug's childhood, and how he had to just keep telling himself he's happy by saying "its all sunshine, nothing but sunshine."
"They're All Gonna Laugh At You", a powerful song about sellout artists and their fans, and slugs struggle to keep his head up and keep doing what hes doing.
"Guns and Cigarettes", a song about becoming bigger than all the popular things people love today.
"Like Today"- A song about waking up in the morning and doing nothing. Its about a man walking around town, sitting in the park, walking in the music and book stores, and other normal things. As odd as it sounds its my favorite song on the album. It has a bluesy feel to it, and the metaphors he uses are fantastic. Its a perfect description of what i do when i get depressed: just walking around thinking about different things, and being polite to people in acceptance of how shitty i feel.
"Don't Ever Fucking Question That"- This song is about slugs conception and the way his parents met. It describes sex without ever saying the word in the craziest and most beautiful way, and then talks about his relationship with his mom. "I love you, dont ever fucking question that, thats why well probably never get along, if i was better at finding the right words to say it, i wouldnt need to write these motherfucking songs". This is one of the most powerful songs on the album.
Theres several other great sons on the album, but these are my favorites.

this is a great album to kick back on the porch and smoke cigarettes and listen by yourself. It sounds corny as hell, but this album has truely affected the way i look life and the way i feel.

Reminiscing-Darian D. and Jermy J.

Reminiscing(Prod.By ModernMarvel) by Jermy*J
i met these dudes at a concert a while back and they gave me their "insomniac mixtape", which was great aside from the recording quality, which wasn't terrible but wasn't great either. i ran into them again the other day and they me they got some better equipment now, and it sounds goooood! local nashville hip hop with some home grown recording and scratching, its raw and awesome. check it out fools.

Heres a single from Darian D too thats dooope.
Busted Notes by Darian D

School's in, kids.

"now wait a minute-what the hell does chopping trees have to do with culinary?"
that's the spirit kid, analyse the lyric
from the moment that you hear it, see, cuz most don't have the skill to utilize their ears' function as a garbage filter,
so their brain gets clogged and congested by the time and the effort that's invested in illusion

this shit is on fire. im digging it.

I bet God thinks you're amusing..

this is real music. real fucking lyrics. real soul. this is what music is about. i know ive been on an atmosphere kick recently, but i cant help it. its just amazing fucking music. just think about this line: "Oddly enough, I'm happy I ain't famous...imagine waking up to the fact that you're simply entertainment. I bet god thinks you're amusing."
so fuck you to Wiz Khalifa for selling out like the rest of 'em, knew you had it in ya.
fuck you to whoever says old hip hop is too boring
fuck you to whoever cant respect the value of lyrical content
fuck you to whoever says they only like "party music"
fuck waka, fuck lil b, fuck liking music because its popular, fuck liking music because its different.
fuck the norm, fuck saying fuck the norm.
fuck you to whoever says posting old music aint worth it. because it is. its not that i only post it because its old, i post it out of respect and love, and a need i feel to share it with the rest of the world that i feel ignores it. no one even reads this shit anyways. so fuck you.

Feel Good

Rock The Fuck Out by Parker Stallworth
this is a poem i really like, it makes me feel better when i feel shitty, i guess thats why i like it.
i put it on a beat for fun. fuck it.

Monday, April 18, 2011

this song came on my shuffle while i was doing my homework and i had to post it. This sounds cliche but its a fucking beautiful song. lyrical genius. slugs not a rapper, hes a poet.
basically, what i get out of it is that its a story about his father meeting his mother, and his conception, among other things. "the player met a virgin, made a virgo, named him shaun." definitely up there on my list of favorites from Atmosphere, even though its a fucking long list.

Brand Nubian-Slow Down

"I've seen your kind before you're not original, just a sick mixed up individual" this song is tight and is one of Brand Nubian's most famous songs from their debut album One for All. This group comes from NY and has made a lot of good stuff. For anybody that watches Entourage you may recognize this song from season 3.

Royce Da 5'9-Boom

Damn premo is good

Diggy Simons-Shook Ones

Props to Evan for showing me this shit. Diggy Simmons is that kid from Run's House if you remember and he just released a mixtape hosted by preemo with some of his beats and scratching. This is a beat from an old Mobb Deep song of the same name, and Mac Miller's best song has a beat from the 90's too. So thats some good news eh?
Oh and you might recognize the beat from 8 mile in the freestyles at the end.

Some illmatic tracks for tuesday

Yo, they call me Nas, I'm not your legal type of fella, Moet drinkin, marijuana smokin street dwella.

Monday, January 31, 2011

The beat is sinister, Preemo makes ya relax

A song to listen to while you read:
What better way to kick things off then some preemo apreesh. From Gangstarr to Mos Def and a helluva lot in between and after, DJ Premier/preemo/preem/primo has been on top of the hip-hop Dj'ing world for quite a long time. When you think of new york hip hop, chances are youre thinking of a song preem produced. Preem is well known for mastering the art of sampling, and he often can even string together coherent sentences, made from lines in multiple songs. One of the most notable is Mathematics by Mos Def, where he takes the following to make the chorus of the song:
"The Mighty Mos Def" (from Mos Def's "Body Rock"),
"It's simple mathematics" (Fat Joe's "John Blaze"),
"Check it out" (Lady of Rage from Snoop Dogg's "For All My Niggaz & Bitches"),
"I revolve around science" (from Ghostface Killah's verse on Raekwon's "Criminology"),
"What are we talking about here" (from the movie Ghostbusters Said by William Atherton's Character),
"Do your math" (from Erykah Badu's "On & On"), and
"One, two, three, four" (from James Browns's "Funky Drummer")
(Thanks Wikipedia)

I can honestly not count the number of times ive recognized a sample from a preem song i heard that i ended up hearing in its actual song. Most recently, I was driving the other day and I heard "tragic like the havoc of a nuclear bomb" in a gangstarr song, and I realized that thats where that sample in Boom by Royce da 5'9 comes from. He is an artist at sampling and can make even lame shit sound sick.

Preem is also known well for being able to craft beats from anything and everything, including turning this:

into this:

fucking sick, right?
some of his shit just blows me away.
Other notable rappers he has made beats for:
Afu-Ra
Capone-n-Noreaga
Common
Royce da 5'9
Literally COUNTLESS more. Chances are, if you hear a sick beat in any rap song from the 90's, look it up, itll be preemo. Or Hi-Tek. But thats a whole different story.

heres a recent interview with him.

And i will leave you with a tight song. Because youre worth it.
